The Reading Wish List

book list christian books book list

As a little girl, my parents would punish me (usually for not doing my chores...) by putting my book on top of the refrigerator.

It was the worst.

I would often make up for those hours by staying up late with the door open just a crack to let the light from the hallway into my dark bedroom so I could finish just one more chapter...

I spent hours curled around whatever book I was reading at the moment, losing myself in the story, the adventure. Even with the TV blaring or my sisters playing loudly right next to me, the allure of a good book tuned out all the noise.

I'm still like that.

Although, now I don't have to sit with the door open, breathing quietly so Mom doesn't catch me reading late at night. Now, I just turn on the lamp next to my bed and prop up pillows to block the light so it doesn't wake Trevor.

I'm always finding books I'd love to read. Always.

And then I'm subsequently forgetting them until the rare chance when we end up at Barnes and Noble and I drag my poor husband through the store exclaiming, "Oh! I wanted to read this one! And this one! And that one!"

(Goodbye, you lovely gift cards.... and all my cash, too....)

But!

This year, I'm going to do better. Yes, I'm going to actually remember all those books I want to read, and that way, I don't end up (like I did this year), with a big stack of awesome literature waiting for me and distracting me from, oh, painting the bathroom or washing the dishes. Slowly. I want to read slowly, instead of devouring nine books at once.

So!

Let's start talking reading list. In no particular order, because really, how could I choose??

1) Not by Sight: A Fresh Look at Old Stories of Walking by Faith

I love me some old biblical stories that are refreshed again and again to bring new insights. This book promises that... and just sounds really good.

2) Wild in the Hollow: On Chasing Desire and Finding the Broken Way Home

Finding the broken way home. That's certainly been my experience.

3) Simply Tuesday: Small-Moment Living in a Fast-Moving World

Living by counting my blessings in every moment has made an incredible difference in living in the moment- I'd love to hear more about it.

4) Seeds of the Word: Finding God in the Culture

Man, this one just sounds really interesting. Finding glimpses of God in a culture that seems so opposed to Him sometimes- now that would give ya hope!

5) The Blue Parakeet: Rethinking How You Read the Bible

Scott (the author) was a professor of mine, and he was writing this book while I was in his class. I never read it, but his class was just so great, I always meant to and always forgot.

6) Born-Again Dirt: Farming to the Glory of God

Just starting out on our little farmstead means that we're getting lots of advice- from Trevor's farming family, from neighbors, from farmers I'm interviewing... but what about from God? This book looks so interesting-- I really want to check it out.

... and that's what I've got so far.

I'm sure there will be more.

What have you been reading lately?
Read any of these? What did you think?

  1. Small moment living in a fast moving world sounds like it would fit in right where my mindset is these days. Nice listing of books Ally

  2. I love reading and always read so much as a child. My parents weren't as smart as yours... they gave me time out in my room. Teehee... introvert, reader's dream.

Did you ever read Girl of the Limberlost by Gene Stratton Porter? It's one of my all time favorites.

    1. No, I never have! I'll have to look into that one, thanks for the rec, Danielle.

Yeah, my parents wised up to the fact that I really didn't mind time out in my room as long as my book was in there, too...

  3. I do the same thing...I see a book I want to read, then forget all about it when it's time to get a new book to read. Thank you for writing your picks down so I at least have a place to go for ideas when I finish my current book. :)

  4. my childhood was the same! I got punished by losing reading privileges. I'd feel guilty reading signs! One of my new blogs (there are many) is a book review blog! http://deadtreestattooed.blogspot.com/ Please come by sometime! I liked a lot of your suggestions, although I'm not reading a lot of religious stuff right now. But I have a book I'll tackle soon about water imagery in the Bible and you might like it!

  6. What fiendish parents you must have had! :-) I was, still am, an avid reader. I love to read for reading's sake, but I also find it helps me as a writer. Have you read "Year of Biblical Womanhood?" I received it for Christmas and finished it in less than five days. I know there was a lot of controversy about it when it first came out, but I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed the humor, her message about the power of women in spreading God's word and healing the world, and her very subtle marriage advice. I'd highly recommend it!

I've started a running list of books I want to read, and will have to add a few of those you've listed here too. At the rate I'm going, I will have finished my current list about the time my daughter graduates from high school. She's 3.

    Happy reading!
