Blessings this Week: 07.08.2016 Edition

Talking about blessings in the face of all the evil going on seems... trite. It seems naive. It seems like denying the truth and putting on a happy face and ignoring the gritty realities of this past week.

People are dying, justice is missing, and anger courses through our country this week.

And here I am, talking about blessings.

It's not because I don't see what's going on. It's not because I live in rural Iowa, and most of my neighbors are white. It's not because I'm in denial.

I'm counting blessings because I believe in a good God. Because I know that fighting for happiness, even in the face of such pain, is the only way to keep rejoicing in Him, and I refuse to let fear or despair win. I'm counting blessings because I don't grieve as one who has no hope. I count because the counting brings the hope, and shows me a small piece of the character of our God who also grieves the events of this past week.

I count blessings because I believe that the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

The lilies are blooming-- I never get sick of that view

Trevor helped his dad a bit this weekend with some field work-- I'm grateful for this wonderful family I'm a part of, and for a husband who works hard and has a serving heart.

I never thought (ever) that this rural, farming lifestyle would be something that I'd experience. All of the sudden, I know what "CRP ground" is and I'm getting better at determining north/south/east/west directions. It's a little crazy.

A rabbit taking a rest next to my mums.

The raspberry bushes are starting to produce, making my morning drive to work a little sweeter.

Stormy weather, and dark clouds in the distance.

I took both dogs for a walk the other day. Both. At the same time. I felt pretty accomplished.

This is our "compost pile" (I say that loosely, since basically I just dump whatever will decompose over there on the pile of dirt left over from when they put in our septic tank, hoping that it will magically improve the soil quality, somehow).

It's growing stuff. I'm either a terrible compost-er, or a brilliant gardener.

Because, look! Squash flowers!

Find the blessings. Seek the light. Don't lose hope. Love can overcome.

  1. Some people deliberately plant squash on their compost piles. You are gifted - you did it intuitively.
